About Me

Ming Gao

Cozy Art For Fucked Up People

Headshot of shop owner: woman with black hairMy name is Ming (or you may know me as Averil too!) and I am the artist behind everything in this shop! I have loved art of different kinds all my life long - from cartoons to still lifes, to the album art of my favourite records. Today, my main influences are art nouveau, Asian art (including anime) and whimsical, cozy art.
At the same time, I love peeking just a little bit into the abyss, mixing just a few elements of horror or weirdness into my usually colorful and bright artwork - I believe the true horrors of life aren't hiding in the dark anyways.

As a result you will see cute little cats worshipping satan, tea in the living form of slime girls, flowers with a slightly too real looking eyeball.

100% Human Drawn

Everything in my shop - online or in person - is drawn with a pen in hand. A digital one usually, but the shapes and lines are all crafted with the same movements and thought processes as they would be on paper. Everything you see here are the artworks and products I chose to create with the limited resources that a human has - the ones that were worth my time, double checked, and not discarded until the very end despite the challenges on the way. There is value in that.

Timeless Rare Pieces - No Mass Production

Black Cat with Book Puns Charm

I still run my business from my own home. All products I offer are still made only in small batches, some as little as 5 pieces per run, most below 100, pretty much none over 200. This ensures that everything I make will eventually find a new home and bring joy to someone, rather than being produced in mass to be dumped entirely once the season is over. I avoid products with too much seasonality or trends, and focus on the ones that will stay relevant for years and years to avoid the risk of having to toss out anything - each piece deserves to find an owner who is happy with it, even if they stay on my shelves for months or even years.
